At Emu Park Surf Life Saving Club, we’re passionate about helping our members grow. Whether you’re brand new or looking to take on more responsibility, we offer training and education to support you every step of the way.
From your very first course to more advanced qualifications, our team of experienced trainers will help you build the confidence and skills you need to get involved in lifesaving—both on the beach and behind the scenes.
Training Pathways Include:
- Bronze Medallion – Your first step to becoming a qualified surf lifesaver
- Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) – Perfect for younger members aged 13–14
- IRB Crew & Driver – Get involved in inflatable rescue boat operations
- First Aid & Advanced Resuscitation – Vital lifesaving and emergency care skills
- Radio Operations – Learn to communicate effectively during patrols
- Observers – Support patrols without needing to enter the water

Saving Lives In the Water
To become an active in the water surf lifesaver at Emu Park SLSC, you’ll need to complete either the Bronze Medallion (Certificate II in Public Safety) or the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) for younger members.
Who Can Join?
- Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) – for members aged 13–14 and over
- Bronze Medallion – for members aged 15 and over
What You’ll Learn
Through our Bronze or SRC training course, you’ll build the skills needed to patrol the beach safely. Training covers:
- Surf awareness and survival
- Rescue techniques using a rescue board and rescue tube
- First aid and CPR
- Emergency care
- Basic anatomy and physiology
- Patrol procedures
The Fitness Test
At the end of your course, you’ll need to complete a fitness test:
- Bronze Medallion:
200m run → 200m swim → 200m run (in under 8 minutes) - SRC:
100m run → 100m swim → 100m run (in under 5 minutes)
You’ll also complete a theory exam, demonstrate resuscitation and first aid skills, and take part in a rescue simulation. Once complete, you’ll be ready to join a patrol and help keep our beaches safe.
Skill Maintenance
Every year all members are required to update their skills and certificates through ‘Skills Maintenance’ which includes an online theory part and a practical test part.
WHAT TO BRING: High Viz Rash Shirt and Club Cap, Theory Paper Certificate of Completion and if required, bring your pool swim time
POOL SWIM: Look for the dates in the pre-season correspondence. To have your swim coach or accredited coach sign off on your proficiency you can use the Pool Form which can be found here.
ON LINE THEORY PAPER: The online Theory Paper is now available on the Member’s portal (members.sls.com.au)
Officials Training
Get involved and call the shots with the best seat in the house!
Every surf sports competition needs a dedicated and well-trained team of officials. Much like any sport, umpire or referee, the role of a sport official is to act as an impartial and balanced judge across all competition and fulfil obligations with accuracy, consistency, objectivity and high sense of integrity.
Technical Official
Provides members with a higher level of understanding in the Surf Sports environment and allows them to focus on key areas that may be of interest to them.
Officials who choose to fulfil specific officiating role/s and who work with participants (non-bronze proficient, Surf Rescue Certificate qualified or bronze proficient) who are actively competing in a club / branch / state surf sport competition environment. Officiating roles may include:
- Marshall / Check-Marshall
- Starter / Check-starter
- Recorder
- Timekeeper
- Finish Judge
Requirements:
To become a Technical Official, you must be:
- Minimum of 16 years of age
- SLSA Member
- The holder of a valid blue card
- Completed Child Youth Risk Management Strategies (CYRMs) and Child Safe Awareness training (via Member Portal)
